UChicago Game Design

About Us

UChicago Game Design is an RSO centered around a practical exploration of game design principles. Our club hosts events ranging from critical analyses to focused design workshops to solo and collaborative development opportunities in the hopes of making game design accessible and fun for everyone at UChicago.

UGD sponsors a variety of development teams who each create a game over the course of the year. We hope to create a community where every creator, from writers and musicians to graphic artists and programmers, can participate in and learn about game design. Whether you’ve never opened Unity before or are a seasoned MAAD major, everyone is welcome to join the club and make a game for the very first time!

We meet biweekly (Sunday and Monday) for educational demonstrations, discussions, and activities and for groups to work on their game design projects. It is our goal for every team to ultimately produce a game that they are proud of, whether for experience, resume building, or even just bragging rights.

Visit our archive of past projects to see examples of our past teams’ work, and stop by on Monday evenings to get involved!

Meet the Board:

Isaac Berman

Isaac Berman

President

Isaac (he/him) is a 4th year math and computer science major with a MAAD minor. Although mainly a programmer on projects, Isaac has also worked as a producer on several games. After an extended stint at Celeste speedrunning, Isaac is currently pouring far too many hours in the factory-building sim Satisfactory. His recent projects include a small math game app, an online networked Pong proof of concept, and an ongoing pinball combat game. Feel free to contact Isaac at bermani@uchicago.edu or @kipahlord13#2343 on Discord.

Eren Slifker

Eren Slifker

Grimp (Vice President)

Eren Slifker (they/them) is a 3rd-year studying Media Arts and Design and Music major at the College. They write game music and experimental ambient music, design art installations, VR experiences, puzzle games, and escape rooms, and create educational programming in a variety of fields. You can find them try-harding at Celeste on the MADD couches, kneading sourdough into submission in the kitchen, or watching endless hours of D&D actual play. They are currently no-lifing their way through Satisfactory and pondering their orb. Get in touch with them at slifker@uchicago.edu or @erenplaysgames#9979 on Discord!

Bruno (BJ Johnson) Pasquinelli

Bruno (BJ Johnson) Pasquinelli

BJ Johnson (Treasurer)

Bruno (he/him) is a 3rd year MAAD major suffering his way through the university. His hobbies include studying game design, sleeping, and watching endless amounts of YouTube. You can find him working in the MADD or studying in the MADD or… you get the point. He’s currently playing through Monster Hunter but is a huge horror game fan! You can contact him at Brunop@uchicago.edu or @Torchwood#1312 on discord.

Josephine Markin

Josephine Markin

God-Queen

Josephine Markin (she/her) is a 2nd year game design enthusiast joining the UGD Board for the first time this year. Although loath to ever make an important decision until the very last minute, she is considering majoring in Media Arts and Design after several game design projects and an excellent class taught by Chris Carloy. She is currently playing through Pyre but is willing to take a break to defeat you in popular* aggressive-gardening board game Overgrowth. Reach Josephine at markinsd@uchicago.edu or @Anonymouse#1190 on Discord.

Nicole Stachowiak

Nicole Stachowiak

God Usurper

Nicole Stachowiak (she/her) is a 3rd year in the College majoring in Media Arts and Design and English Language and Literature. This is her first year as board member for UGD, after first experiencing game design in Critical Video Game Studies (though she’s been a rabid JRPG fan since playing Xenoblade Chronicles). When she isn’t in the MADD Center, she’s probably emulating old games nobody cares about, or trying a recipe with way too many steps. Right now, she’s just finished Digital Devil Saga for the first time, so you can rest assured she’s played a real Shin Megami Tensei game. Reach her at nstachowiak@uchicago.edu or on discord, yo, rubedo#7106.

Katherine Waterman

Katherine Waterman

[[[ɮʟÖɖ ɢɨʋɛռ]]]

Katherine Waterman (she/her) is a 2nd year majoring in Computer Science and Media Arts and Design, and this is her first year serving the UGD Board. Video games have been a staple in her life since she first watched her dad play Elder Scrolls V, and now she hopes to eventually create 2D indie games for a living. When she’s not hovering around Weston, you can usually find her messing around in Unity, playing D&D, carving through Monster Hunter World, or at the gym. Feel free to chat with her at kwaterman210@uchicago.edu or @Delta_2IO#8669 on Discord.

Heather Kim

Heather Kim

Board Member

Heather (she/her) is a 2nd year MAAD and Visual Arts major. She enjoys rpgs and working on the visual side of games such as concept design. You can talk to her about anything Ace Attorney or Corpse Party. Reach her through her email heatherkim@uchicago.edu or @saidaman#5338 on Discord.

Kaelan Doyle-Myerscough

Kaelan Doyle-Myerscough

RIP (1994-2023)

Kaelan Doyle-Myerscough (they/them or he/him) is a PhD student in Cinema and Media Studies, and also a narrative designer for games. Kaelan’s research focuses on worldbuilding; if you ask them about their dissertation progress they will hiss at you, but if you’re doing worldbuilding for a game or creative project, they will have lots of suggestions. When not making games or building worlds, Kaelan lives under a massive pile of fabric which they are slowly (very slowly…) sewing into a bespoke wardrobe. Kaelan can be reached at kaelan@uchicago.edu or @drama#5058 on discord.

Ashlyn Sparrow

Ashlyn Sparrow

Cake (moist/delicious)

Ashlyn Sparrow (she/her) is secretly pulling the strings behind all of your backs. She is a mastermind unlike any other, and controls more world governments than you would ever really know. If you look at the facts for long enough, you realize: the truth come out; Ash actually made every video game ever.
